During pregnancy and after

A time that asks a lot of your body and your heart.

Why it's part of my practice

The benefits of occupational therapy in maternal health remain largely unrecognized, when in fact occupational therapists (OTs) are uniquely equipped to address physical, psychosocial, emotional, and environmental concerns during pregnancy and postpartum.

From my article “Support for Mothers Through Pregnancy and Postpartum with Occupational Therapy”

I'm a certified perinatal mental health provider (PMH-C). I take a whole-person approach to recovery, considering your body, emotional well-being, and everyday life in a trauma-informed way.

Frequently asked questions

What new parents ask me.

Can I bring my baby? How soon after the birth?

Your baby is welcome during sessions. You can come as soon as you feel the need after giving birth, depending on the challenges you'd like support with. Some physical or manual interventions may, however, need to wait until your 6-week postnatal follow-up with your doctor.

I have muscle pain from breastfeeding. How can occupational therapy help?

By assessing your unique situation. Through personalized interventions, I teach you optimal breastfeeding posture, offer an ergonomic assessment of your environment, and teach effective body mechanics to reduce strain. Recommendations may include supportive devices, stretching and strengthening exercises, pain management strategies, and consulting a lactation consultant as needed.

My hands and wrists have hurt since the birth. Is that common?

Yes. During pregnancy and postpartum, hormonal changes, fluid retention, and the repetitive lifting, holding, and cradling of your baby put a lot of stress on the hands and wrists. Hand therapy can help you care for your baby with more ease.

I haven't quite felt like myself since the birth. Can you help?

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are common, and the transition to parenthood can bring significant emotional changes. With training in perinatal mental health, I support you in navigating these changes and adjusting to your evolving roles and family dynamics. When additional mental health care is needed, I can help connect you with an appropriate healthcare professional.

Do I have to wait until after the birth to see you?

No. I support you from pregnancy onward, to prepare for birth and what comes after. If a C-section is planned, or possible, my C-section birth classes are designed for you.
